Spring 2006 Concerts

Friday Jan 20 Los Morenos

This is one hot band from Calgary.  Hot was the operative word last night as Los Morenos brought their high energy to Athabasca.  They played to an overfull house.  Everyone was up dancing, many on the stage with Los Morenos.  Everyone left the Nancy Appleby tapping their feet and a big smile on their faces.

Thursday Feb 9  Tom Russell and Andrew HardinTom came to town with a new sideman.  Andrew Hardin was unable to tour and his replacement Michael Lorca Martin proved to be exceptional. Tom was in fine form with a strong singing voice and unique sense of humour.  He started with an homage to Leonard Cohen, singing Tower of Song. The evening was well received by the Heartwood regulars.  Tom has collaborated with many artists over the years and it was a pleasant surprise to  hear him sing a song he wrote with Ian Tyson, Navajo Blanket.  His stories will reverberate at the Nancy Appleby Theatre for many months to come.

Saturday Feb 25 Keri Lynn Zwicker

Dont miss this bright and lively harpist.  Keri Lynn will have a new cd to release.  So be prepared to listen and buy. Keri and friends presented a wonderful evening of music and song.  The Zwicker girls were on stage, making the evening a magical event.  Her cd release party concert was a big hit in Athabasca.

Thursday Mar 16 Bill Bourne and Eivor  Palsdottir

You will not forget this great duo. Was I right about that sentence.  Bill is always inspirational with his great songs and unique styling.  Now add a magnificent blond Viking named Eivor Palsdottir and you have an evening of exceptional music. The quality and power of her voice and her sheer joy of singing created an evening to remember.

A unique folksinger of baseball ballads.

This was the line up for 2005.

What a great variety of sounds that thrilled and amazed the us.

January 20 Connie Kaldor and Roy Forbes

January 23  The  Bills

February 5 Aengus Finnan  (cancelled)

Feb 6  Bill Bourne and Rachelle Van Zanten                    Bill was accompanied by Rachelle Van Zanten of Painting Daisies.  Bill proved once again why he is timeless as a singer songwriter.  Rachelle has a great career ahead with Painting Daisies.

February 21 Martyn Joseph

March 11 FerronFerron presented and witty and soulful act for the Heartwood faithful.  Her bitter irony was well received.

April 1 Murray McLauchlanMurray down by the Henry Moore, talking about that little fat girl (a real friend of mine, called Lee).  What a Canadian music icon!  Great to hear some of the stories behind some memorable songs.

April 12 Arrogant WormsThis group of worms are hilarious together.  We all left laughing from the performance.

Sept. 9   Wendy McNeill

Wendy McNeill was a welcome treat in Athabasca last night.  Her energetic performance has set a high bench mark for the rest of the season.

Sept.20  Kelly Joe Phelps

Steve Dawson is a great musician.  He proved that on Tuesday as he entertained the Heartwood Folk Club at the Nancy Appleby Theatre.  "I'd like to sing like a bird, but all I do is mumble and shout."  Kelly Joe certainly did that last night in Athabasca.  KellyJoe Phelps played some soulful blues by himself and was then joined by Steve for a few tunes.  An interesting evening was had by all.

Oct. 7  Lynn Miles

Lynn Miles brought her special talent to Athabasca last night.

Oct. 13  Eric Bogle

Eric Bogle returned to Athabasca last night and was his usual self.  Telling funny stories and singing amusing  songs.  He still displays a great awareness of the human condition.  After his great antiwar song, Waltzing Matilda, there was not a dry eye in the house.

Oct. 28  John Wort Hannam

Talking to John before the performance, he talked of musicians "noodling through their music".  Well there was no noodling last night in Athabasca with John and the boys lit up the Nancy Appleby Theatre.  His songwriting ability has a unique twist to some of his songs.  A great evening of music.

Nov. 11  Eleni Kelakos

A spell binding performer. She made you feel as thought you were in Greece with her.  Her contemporary observations made for insightful songs.

Dec. 10  Terry McDade and the McDades

This was an outstanding sold out performance. Seven musicians brought an energetic performance that was enjoyed by all.
